In recent years, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has played a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity, driving economic growth, and fostering cultural exchanges among participating nations. As a model of peaceful cooperation and inclusive development, the BRI adheres to the principles of consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits, ensuring that the needs and interests of partner countries are prioritized. By improving infrastructure connectivity, the initiative has catalyzed progress in areas such as infrastructure development, trade, and economic growth.

The Garissa Photovoltaic Power Station: A Game-Changer for Kenya

In Garissa County, northeastern Kenya, the Garissa Photovoltaic Power Station, the largest of its kind in East Africa, stands as a shining example of China-Africa collaboration. Constructed by a Chinese company, this power station has effectively addressed local electricity shortages, providing clean and reliable energy to residents and supporting Kenya’s sustainable development.

Tackling Kenya’s Energy Challenges

Electricity shortages have long been a significant barrier to Kenya’s economic progress, with the country yet to achieve universal electrification. While hydroelectric power is a key energy source, its reliability is compromised by seasonal fluctuations between rainy and dry periods. However, Kenya’s vast solar energy potential offers a promising solution. According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority of Kenya, the country’s solar power generation potential is approximately 15,000 megawatts. Large-scale photovoltaic power stations, like the one in Garissa, are proving to be an effective way to address the region’s energy deficits.

The Garissa Photovoltaic Power Station, funded by a loan from the China Export-Import Bank and implemented by a consortium of China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. and JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd., was developed under the Kenyan Ministry of Energy. With an installed capacity of 54.66 megawatts, the station can meet the electricity needs of more than 380,000 people across 70,000 households.

Transforming Lives and Communities

The power station has been integrated into Kenya’s national grid, significantly improving the quality of life for residents in the northern region. Hanningtongochi, an expert from Kenya’s Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, highlighted the station’s transformative impact on local communities.

For Elizabeth Wanjiku, a small restaurant owner in Garissa County, the stable and affordable electricity supply has been life-changing. “We used to face frequent power outages and often relied on expensive diesel generators,” she said. “Now, with reliable and low-cost electricity, businesses like mine can operate longer hours, creating more job opportunities for locals.” Elizabeth’s restaurant now operates from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., significantly boosting her income.

Similarly, Harunjaya, a local farmer, credits the photovoltaic power station for enhancing his agricultural productivity. “With electricity-powered irrigation, I no longer need to manually carry water, saving time and labor,” he explained. “My farm has been expanding year after year, and I save hundreds of dollars on electricity bills each month.”

A Model for China-Africa Collaboration

The success of the Garissa Photovoltaic Power Station underscores the potential of China-Africa cooperation in renewable energy. Liu Yichao, project manager of the Garissa Solar Energy Project at China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd., expressed confidence in the partnership. “Photovoltaic power stations have a short construction period and large installed capacity, making them an effective solution to electricity shortages,” he said. “Helping Africa develop green energy and improve livelihoods is a key mission for Chinese companies operating in the region.”

George Aluru, Chairman of the Kenya Power Sector Association, emphasized the complementary strengths of China and Kenya in renewable energy. “China brings advanced technology and extensive experience, while Kenya is rich in renewable energy resources,” he said. “This partnership will drive green development not only in Kenya but across Africa.”

Conclusion

The Garissa Photovoltaic Power Station is more than just an energy project—it is a symbol of the transformative power of international cooperation. By addressing Kenya’s energy shortages and promoting sustainable development, the station exemplifies the shared benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative. As China and Africa continue to collaborate in renewable energy, projects like Garissa will pave the way for a greener, more prosperous future for all.
